My first Deer was an illegal Doe. I was 12 or 13 years old. My Dad dropped me off at a friends cornfield at around noon and said I'll be back to get you this evening.
Far away in the distance was a neat stack of cider blocks fashioned into steps to cross over a fence.
I figgered that would be as good a place as any to sit down and wait.
And too it was on top of a hill over looking the already picked and dried out corn field.
Behind me was an Apple orchard of by gone days yet some of the trees though battered looking probably bared apples.
As I sat on the top of those cider blocks ever so slowly turning my head left to right and back for a couple of hours I soon became very sleepy so I proped my rifle against the fence, then curled up on top of the cider blocks and fell fast a sleep.
When I woke I was faceing the old apple orchard and before my eyes 7 Deer were grazeing.
My heart went to pounding and my breathing was a little harder when I saw all those DEER !
Ever so slowly I slid down each step until my feet were touching ground.
I reached for my rifle and laid it to rest on the top of the cider blocks and then took careful aim at the close's Deer and fired !
The Deer's legs crumpled and down it went as the others fled.
I was grinning ear to ear has I made my way to my very first Deer !
As I was looking the Deer over I heard a horn honk and knowing the sound of the horen I knew it was my Dad.
So with gun in toe I hurried down the hill and ran another 200 yards to the window of my Dads car.
As I bounced around exclaiming I got one I got one he and my big brother exited the car and I then led them to my kill.
When my Dad saw the Deer he went to fuss'in because it was a Doe and he went on to tell me Doe's were Illegal.
All I could say was I didn't know, it's a Deer !
With that he told my brother and I to drag it to the car, which we did. Now let me tell you I'd reather of had an azz whoopin than drag that critter to the car. She was Heavy !!!
But we made it and in the trunk it went.
When we got home and a few minutes later my cousin Frog came by and helped skin it.
He was several years older than me and said Mike since your a Deer hunter now you can come hunt at my Deer camp from now on.
Which I did for years.
Frog and I continued to hunt until his death at 43.

I used a brand new Western Field (I Think)(Montgomery Wards ) which was a Winchester model 70 push feed 30-06 rifle.
My Dad Managed Wards here and took it off the shelf for me to use/borrow.
Yep they use to stock firearms back then.
Christmas was a month away and he surprised me with a Marlin 30-30 for a Christmas gift.
I don't remember this gun to well...My Dad ended up selling it to someone and then bought me another one before the next Deer season came. I don't even think I ever shot the first one...As long as I got another one LOL I was fine with him selling it...A.H |
